SNUFFBOXES AND CIGAR CASES

Political campaign snuffboxes were in vogue for a period spanning Andrew Jackson's 1820 campaigns through the 1880 campaigns.  The earliest snuffboxes were generally papier-mache made overseas for the American market with paper transfers on the cover finished with several coats of lacquer.  A notable exception in the examples listed below is the hand painted German snuffbox depicting Dewitt Clinton.  Snuffboxes were also occasionally made of pewter.

Political cigar cases span the period from 1840 through 1852, and are much scarcer than snuffboxes.  These cases were made overseas for the American market.  Non-political cigar cases constructed in the same manner turn up in antique shops with decorative or less frequently historical scenes.  Homepage.
