JAMES BUCHANAN MEDALS & BADGES

(1856)

    Democratic Party winner in 1856.

1856-2 & 4 are examples of "rebus" (a puzzle composed of words or syllables that appear in the  form of  pictures) items, using a buck and cannon to spell out Buchanan's name.  1856-2 & 4 are also examples of a die being used to produce both medals and shall badges.  1856-4 is one of the most desirable pre-1860 campaign shell badges.

1856-7 is an example of medals being produced by a diecutter for each of the candidates.  The dies were cut by F.B. Smith and Hartmann and sold for fifty cents in copper and 25 cents in white metal.
