CAMPAIGN FLAG BANNERS
Banners with flag motifs were used regularly in campaigns from 1840 through 1900. Some of these banners include images of the presidential candidate and a few are jugate banners with both the presidential and vice-presidential candidates. Some banners also include slogans and other motifs . Flag banners are among the most sought after items for collectors of political and historical memorabilia.
The seminal work on cloth items is Herbert Collings work Threads of History, which was published by the Smithsonian Institution in 1978 and is available for several hundred dollars in the used book market. Ed Sullivan's book Collecting Political Memorabilia also includes a good general discussion of flags and related banners.
