Democratic-Republican party loser in 1824. Democrat party winner in 1828 and 1832.
The 1828-5 medal is unlisted in copper. In fact there are no listed 1828 medals for Jackson or John Quincy Adams in copper. The Charles McSorley collection auctioned by Presidential Coin (Joe Levine) included an example with the same obverse but with a smoothed reverse. Joe Levine commented that "without exception, all of the 1828 tokens were struck in white metal." The pictured solves the mystery of the McSorley example as it appears to confirm that there were at least a few 1828 copper campaign medals.
I suspect that 1828-1 is the finest known example of the type and perhaps takes the prize for the top condition 1828 Jackson medal. 1832-1 is highly prized by hard times tokens collectors.
"Backbuttons", buttons with the design on the shank side, were used for several campaigns. The images include a previously unknown backbutton for Caleb Strong, Massachusetts Governor from 1812 through 1816, a period during which backbuttons are known (there exists one for James Monroe).
